Mention ILFC and the first thing people tend to think of is Steve Udvar-Hazy, the lessor's chairman. Although the company employs more than 100 people, its 62-year-old founder defines it. His personal brand is undoubtedly one of ILFC's biggest strengths, but it may also be a risk to any potential buyer.

"Steve is a fantastic asset but private equity investors will be worried about what they call key man risk," says one lessor.

However, it is unlikely that investors need worry about the future of the company when the Hazy era eventually ends. There are other highly experienced individuals heading up ILFC, and despite Hazy's long shadow, executives are given a great deal of latitude in driving the company's activities.
