The industry is still split over replacement parts that have not been made by original equipment manufacturers. While the uncertainty remains, lessors and financiers should develop a strategy that could change over an engine's life.

This year is the 50th anniversary of parts being manufactured under Federal Aviation Administration parts manufacturer approval (PMA) regulations. If someone had thrown a party, it would probably have ended with a fight. No other issue splits the engine world as fundamentally as PMA parts and few things get engine manufacturers as upset.

PMA parts are ones that are manufactured or designed by companies that are not the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). They usually do not have access to the original manufacturer's data, so they design their own parts and have to prove to the FAA, under FAR 21.303 regulations, that their parts are as good, or even better, than the original....
