Have you heard the one about the silkworm farmer, the brewer and the public relations executive? No? Well they are just three of the people that have set up or are planning to set up airlines in India.
India is the world's fastest-changing aviation market. Deregulation has opened up the market for new entrants and five start-up airlines have begun operations in the past 12 months. A similar number are hoping to launch in 2006.
These new entrants and strong economic growth – at 7%, India's gross domestic product growth rate is one of the highest in the world – has meant that the number of passengers has grown by 26% in 2005.
Orders by Indian carriers dominated both the Paris and Dubai airshows and more than 250 new aircraft have been ordered in 2005.
