Feature: What is a 747-400 worth?

Airfinance Journal asked appraisers to assess the value of a 1996-vintage 747-400 powered by CF6-80C2B1F engines.

Boeing delivered its first 747-400 in 1989 to Northwest Airlines. Since then the manufacturer has had more than 40 customers for the aircraft type with 694 orders.

While most of the fleet is based in the Asia-Pacific, with almost 50% of the global fleet, Europe and North America also have large shares of the type.

The fleet is in a transition period as tier-one carriers reduce their use of the 747-400.

Appraiser Ken de Jaeger, vice-president, SH&E, says that historically the success of the type has been, in large part, because of the absence of a direct competitor, which allowed the aircraft to dominate passenger and freighter markets. However, since Boeing’s introduction of the 777 family in June 1995, which is more economical in terms of cost per seat-mile, the 747-400 has struggled to attract a lot of orders.
