Bombardiers CRJ700 entered into service in 2001. This regional jet was the first of the next-generation 70-seat aircraft. American Eagle, Lufthansa and Sky West are among the 17 operators of the type, which can seat up to 78 passengers.

There have been almost 300 orders for the aircraft during the past nine years. However, some critics say that the CRJ700 does not match Embraers direct competitor - the E170.

The CRJ700 has a range of 1,434 nautical miles (nm) and a maximum take-off weight of 72,750 pounds (lbs). The aircraft type also comes in a long-range option, with a range of 2,002nm and a maximum take-off weight of 75,000lbs and an extended-range option, with a range of 1,732nm and a maximum take-off weight of 77,000lbs.
