Delta Air Lines executive sheds light on the reasoning behind the carrier’s selection of Boeing’s 737-900ER.

Yesterday, US carrier Delta Air Lines announced a firm order with Boeing for 100 737-900ERs. The airline, which operates both 737s and also Airbus A320s acquired from its merger with Northwest Airlines, has a clear need to replace ageing 757s and MD80/90s. In the end the choice came down to the 737-900ER versus the A321.

“The essence of the project was to replace the 757,” says a Delta executive familiar with the negotiations.
