HSH Nordbank has reorganized its global transportation team and hired Volker Fabian as head of aviation for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Fabian joins from CIT Aerospace where he was senior vice president and replaces Olaf Sachau, who has been named as head of global commodity finance for HSH Nordbank. Based in London, Fabian will report to Angela Behrend-Goernemann, head of global aviation. He joined CIT in 2001 and held positions in New York, Dublin and Singapore, most recently as senior regional director Asia Pacific for aircraft leasing. Commenting on his appointment, Behrend-Goernemann said: "He has an asset background which is important for us, considering the emphasis we have on asset risk."
The commodity finance team was integrated into the transportation unit at the beginning of this year to explore cross-selling opportunities with aviation, shipping, rail and infrastructure. Sachau takes over from Hans Juergen Buchfink, who becomes senior executive of HSH Nordbank's global commodity groups. The commodity finance team comprises 40 people with a presence in Hamburg, Singapore, London and New York.
Commenting on the integration of commodity finance into transportation, Sachau said: "We are finding that more of our clients play into different sectors, leading to an indirect cross selling approach. For example, India has seen a huge demand for steel. The commodity clients here could also benefit from our shipping and aviation abilities."
As part of the reorganisation, John Duffy's role as head of transportation Asia has been expanded to include head of global infrastructure. John Francis is head of aviation Asia and John Burt is head of aviation Americas.
